About Bheri and Karnali Rivers Multiday Rafting / Kayaking Adventure October and November 2024

This trip is suitable for all:  Non-paddlers (no previous experience required) – you will go in a raft with an experienced raft guide – and if you would like to and a kayak available encouraged to have a go at kayaking on a mellow section of river.  Rafting and/or kayaking - all equipment provided & instruction/guiding given.

Kayakers and Rafters of all abilities - Kayakers, kayak what you are happy to, raft what you are not.  Advice on how much of this trip you should be able to kayak will be given once we hear what your current kayaking ability is and then see you on the water.  Advice/instruction/guiding and safety boaters will be provided.

Weather: Weather for this trip we expect to be pleasant - very unlikely to see any rain - temp during the day will be middle 20's - you will be wearing shorts and tee shirt during the day and paddling in a shortie cag just to help keep water out of your boat – rafting in a shortie wetsuit and splash cag (provided) or rash vest and a pair of leggings is good as the water is cool.  At night you will probably want to put on an extra layer in late evening and early morning - 2 or 3 season sleeping bag is all you will need.  Water temp whilst not warm is pleasant for swimming and ‘river washing’.

River Gradings:  Always subjective – we use the International River Classification of Difficulty to describe.

Bheri: – A strong current, grade 3 (-4) through the gorges, then grade 2 (-3) on run out to confluence with Karnali and then grade 1 to 2 down to Chisapani.

Lower Karnali: – The section we plan to do - A powerful river with a couple of BIG grade 4+ rapids.  River starts at grade 2 to 3+, a long section of several grade 4 (4+) rapids, easing as we approach the confluence with the Seti and then grade 2 to 1 down to Chisapani.

Trip Highlights

About Bheri River - 4 nights 5 days trip

One of the most scenic rivers in Nepal with golden cliffs, green jungle, crystal clear green water, white beaches, excellent fishing, good bird watching and coupled with a powerful current and sparkling rapid of moderate difficulty.  The jungle scenery must be the best in Nepal - quiet and unspoilt.

The section of the Bheri river we will be traveling is a mature river that cuts a wide valley and narrows up for 2 or 3 gorges as it flows west to join the Karnali, just before the Karnali cuts through the Chure Hills and disgorges onto the plains of the Terai and flows through the Royal Bardia National Park.  Thirty years ago, the whole of this area was wild pristine jungle roamed by one of the last nomadic hunting tribes in Nepal the Raute.  There are still a few members of the Raute tribe living by the river and although some of the jungle has been cleared for farming for most of the time you will see only cliffs, forest, and wildlife.

We will paddle from Bheri Ramghat down to the confluence with the Karnali and then all the way to the road bridge at Chisapani.  Four nights, five days, and camp along the way on river beaches.

When we get to Chisapani we will have our lunch, then drive to the Bardia National Park which is around a 1-hour drive.  Stay two nights, 1 day in Bardia National Park.  Stay overnight in lodge.

NB: Those needing/wanting to do a shorter trip can join the trip on Day 8 or Day 9 at the Bardia National Park – please let us know at time of booking.)

Staying in Bardia National Park - 2 nights and 1 full day.

Bardiya National Park is a protected area in Nepal that was established in 1988 as the Royal Bardia National Park.  Covering an area of 968 km² it is the largest and most undisturbed national park in Nepal's Terai, adjoining the eastern bank of the Karnali River and bisected by the Babai River in the Bardiya District.

Activities we will do in Bardia are nature walk, jeep safari, bird watching and some relaxing too.

The Bardia National Park is home to at least 53 mammals including Indian Rhinoceros, Indian Elephant, Bengal Tiger, Barasingha and Gangetic dolphin.  It is also home to several endangered animals such as the Royal Bengal Tiger, Wild Elephant, Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros, Swamp Deer, Black Buck and other endangered species including the Gharialand Marsh Mugger Crocodiles and the Gangetic Dolphin.  A Rusty-Spotted Cat was sighted for the first time in summer 2012 and a sighting of a Fishing Cat was recorded in the Babai River valley in winter 2017.

Nepal is currently recognised as the first nation to double its Tiger population – with it going from 121 to 355 adult tigers.  Bardiya National Park in Nepal is home to a significant population of Royal Bengal Tigers - according to a 2022 tiger census the park has 125 adult tigers.

We will wake up leisurely in our own time and have breakfast.  After that will explore the national park for the day, or if people prefer to spend the day relaxing you can do that too.  Stay overnight in lodge.

NB:  Exact activities to be discussed and agreed with group and we don’t all have to do the same thing – some activities might be extra.)

This will be an early morning start for everyone, we will be driving to the Karnali put-in point at Dungeswor.  Driving time around 6 to 8 hours*.  When we reach Dungeswor we will set up our camp site, cook dinner and get ready for next morning to start the next stage of our adventure.  Seven days down the Karnali river to Chisapani road bridge camping along the way on amazing river beaches.

The Wild West Karnali River - 6 nights 7 days trip

Rising from the famous holy Mt. Kailash in Tibet the Karnali River is Nepal’s Wild West River.  It is the longest and largest river in Nepal.  It carves through the Himalayan landscape many beautiful gorges and canyons as it flows down into the forests of west Nepal.  Travel through some of the most pristine jungle in Nepal filled with an abundance of wildlife.  You may see tigers, deer, monkey, and many species of birds.  The river is very popular for fishing with many different species.  The area is relatively unpopulated and has a real wilderness feel.  Rapids such as ‘Rattle and Roll’, ‘Inversion’, ‘Juicer Shake’, ‘Freight Train’ and many more will provide plenty of excitement.  Camping on sandy beaches and the remote feel of the Karnali River will give a true expedition experience.
