About Annapurna Base Camp

The Annapurna region was first explored by the British Adventurer Col. James O.M. 'Jimmy' Roberts in the year 1956 and exposed to the world as the 'Sanctuary of Gods'. The Sanctuary has been Christened as "Annapurna Sanctuary" ever since. Our adventure to the Annapurna Base Camp starts from outside Pokhara Valley, a scenic spot. The trek combines spectacular mountain scenery with incredible cultural diversity and traverses through rural farms and villages. The trail leads towards the deep gorge between the peaks-Hiunchuli and Machhapuchare and through the dense rain and bamboo forest of the narrow Modi Khola (river) valley then to the sanctuary with immense walls of the mountain fortress. Once into the sanctuary you will be in the midst of the amphitheatre of snow peaks including Annapurna I (8,091m). See other major peaks overlooking the sanctuary which include the Annapurna South (7,219m), Gangapurna (7,455m) and Annapurna III (7,555m). This area with tiny thatched roofed villages, set among the terraced fields, makes an attractive picture with the backdrop of the magnificent snow range of Annapurna, Manaslu and Dhaulagiri including the most majestic peaks of all the Himalayan ranges the Mt. Machapuchere (Fish Tail).

This morning we will drive for about 45 kilometres. This drive offers you the best views of the Annapurna Himalayan range with terraced landscapes and villages and then descending to Nayapul. From there our trek begins in this warm sub tropical region. The walk follows the Modi River upstream to Birethanti & follows the east bank of Bhurungdi Khola with scenery of waterfalls and high green forests. It follows the picturesque trails and finally reaches Tikhedhunga. Lunch will be eaten en route. Walking distance is approximately four hours and we will stay overnight at Tikhedhunga village where you can enjoy the cool splash of the cascading waterfalls.

After breakfast you will continue the trek. The path ascends steeply for a couple of hours to Ulleri village with the scenery of terrace landscape and Annapurna Himalaya. From here the path is more gradual up hill on the winding trail through the cool shade of fores. The walk continues mostly uphill, in the midst of the giant rhododendron forest and you finally reach Ghorepani Deurali. Ghorepani is a busy spot on the ridge in the midst of the beautiful rhododendron forest, offering grand views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri range to the north and west.

Today your guide will wake you early in the morning for a 40-minute hike up to Poonhill with the help of your flashlight or moonlight offering a morning glimpse of stars and walking through the Rhododendron forest. Poonhill is named after the hill tribe Pun, inhabitants of Ghorepani and the surrounding area. It is also a vantage spot for the most panoramic scenery from the far western Himalaya of Dolpo, Mt. Dhaulagiri, Annapurna including Mt. Machhapuchare (Fish Tail) Manaslu all the way to Ganesh Himalayan range. Nearly 600 kilometers of mountain ranges can be viewed from this great spot with the spectacular sunrise on the midwestern Himalaya range. After a great time here return to Ghorepani for breakfast and continue trek to Tadapani. The walk passes through the rhododendron, pine, fur & bamboo forest with a few short ups and downs and finally, you reach Tadapani. This is a wonderful place with close views of the Annapurna and Fishtail mountains, situated in the midst of the rain and alpine mixed forest. This takes around five hours walking up & down with a lunch break at Banthanti.

Tadapani offers good views of upper Modi valley. The route starts the long descent high above the west bank of the Modi Khola River. The Chhomrong village lies at the base of Hiunchuli (6,441 m.). The trek from Tadapani is gradual downhill most of the way through pristine forest of oaks and rhododendron with occasional views of the Annapurnas. This part of the walk is very pleasant until Kimrong hola where we will stop for lunch. The trail from here leads uphill for 1-2 hours, once at the top of the ridge the walk is fairly easy all the way to the village of Chomrong the last village and the gateway to the sanctuary.

From Chomrong the trail leads to the terraced farm fields as you descend to the river. After the bridge it's uphill most of the way for 2-3 hours till you reach the small place of Khuldi-ghar. After Khuldi the trail leads down hill for 1-2 hours till you reach Bamboo, a place in the midst of the bamboo, rhododendron and oaks forest with a couple of teahouses. After a brief stop here, you will walk for 1 hour on a gradual uphill path which brings you to Dovan, an isolated spot with 2-3 teahouses in the middle of the forest near the raging the Modi River. The trail continues for about 2 hours from here, the route winds up steeply to a bank of rock and then levels out, running through thickets of bamboo at the bottom of the gorge keeping always on the west side of the river. It then reaches the small shrine at Panchen Barah and from here the trail climbs to Himalaya hotel where we will stay overnight.

From the Himalaya hotel it's about an hours walk, first on a rocky trail through forests then up a steep ravine, to Hinko at 2,960 m. The trail crosses a ravine & a major avalanche track just beyond Hinko, then climbs through large boulders. About half an hour beyond Hinko we reach Deurali at 3,000 m. As the trail continues into the sanctuary, it crosses two wide avalanche tracks on a narrow trail that huddles up against the cliffs. The trail then descends to meet the Modi Khola & follows the river to Bagar. From Bagar we climb across more avalanche paths cross a moraine & a stream, then climb towards an area known as Machhapchhre Base Camp (MBC) at the elevation of 3,480 m. You can have panoramic views of Hiunchuli, Annapurna I, Annapurna III, and Gangapurna & Machhapuchhre (6,997m.).

Today's walk leads you into the heart of the Sanctuary at the ABC, the trail follows uphill for a few hours, on the grassy path, depending upon the season. The trek is very pleasant as you reach the higher ground with magnificent views of an array of snow peaks all around you with Annapurna I, a great wall of a mountain from this north west face. Annapurna Base Camp has 2-3 teahouses, with the superb panoramic views. In the afternoon you can take an optional short walk around to immerse with the surrounding scenery.

After a great time here we retrace the journey back to Dovan via Machhapuchare Base Camp. The area is cold & windy & is often snowbound and reaches to Deurali where lunch will be served. The trek continues further to Dovan where we will stay overnight.

From Dovan, the trail descends all the way to the bridge and from the bridge it is uphill to Chomrong. After a break here at Chomrong the walk leads to a short downhill path, descending towards Jhinu. The trail is quite steep downhill for an hour, till you reach the village on the ridge. You can visit the hot springs down below by the river Modi near Jhinu village where we stay overnight.

In the morning you can enjoy good scenery having breakfast. We then trek down towards the Modi River at Phedi between Landruk and New Bridge. After crossing Modi Khola (name of river ) on a suspension bridge with a view of wild honey bee hives on the rocky cliff, from here the trail leads to a gradual climb all the way to Landruk village for lunch. From here the path leads to a gradual walk on the winding trail for an hour to a small settlement at Tolkha for the overnight stay.

Tolkha gives grand views of Annapurna south and Hiunchuli can be seen right from your room. With the lovely morning at Tolkha, our journey continues on the gradual winding path towards Bhaise Kharka a small settlement at the base of the hill, from here it is less than an hour climb through the beautiful rain forest to the top of the ridge at Deurali, the highest point of this trek. From here one can view Mt.Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South and Mt. Machhhapuchre.

After Deurali the trek continues down through the forest on a wide path with wonderful scenery. After an hour you reach Pothana village situated in the midst of the forest with awesome views of the Annapurna and Manaslu range. After having lunch, you trek down to the village at Dhampus with its fabulous mountain scenery. From Dhampus an hours descent brings you to Phedi for the smooth drive to Pokhara. After approximately an hours drive arrive at Pokhara by the Phewa Lake side and we will return to our hotel to stay overnight.
